  69. The disc you have in your CD-ROM drive contains two complete
  70. versions of Tropical Rainforest (tm): one for Macintosh, the other for the
  71. PC.  Your CD-ROM driver is smart enough to figure out which one
  72. you view, so sit back and enjoy.

  75. WINDOWS USERS
  76. -------------

  78. Every attempt has been made to provide MPC-compatible content,
  79. both in images (BMP format) and sound (WAV format).  A Windows
  80. navigational program can be found in the root directory of the disc.
  81. You may install part or all of the software (with the exception of the
  82. photos and music) to the hard drive by using the SETUP.EXE program. To do
  83. so, choose RUN from the FILE menu of the Windows Program Manager and type
  84. L:\SETUP, where L is the letter of your CD-ROM drive.  Installing
  85. everything to the hard disk provides MUCH better performance, however, it
  86. will add about 2 MB of files to your hard drive. Buttons in the Windows
  87. program may be used with a mouse or with the TAB and ENTER keys. The
  88. TAB key moves from button to button, and the ENTER key selects.
  89. Standard Windows help is available--just press the button labeled
  90. "?" on the "Control Panel" (button bar) in the program.
  91.  
  92. Keep in mind the following requirements for Windows users:
  93.  
  94. 1.  You must have either Windows version 3.1.
  95.  
  96. 2.  You must have an MPC-compatible sound card to hear the music. Boards
  97. from Creative Labs (the SoundBlaster Pro), Media Vision (Pro Audio 
  98. Spectrum), and many other vendors have been tested for compatibility with
  99. this product.
  100.  
  101. 3.  Still pictures were meant to be displayed with a 256, 32K, 64K,
  102. or 16M color 640 x 480 Windows driver. Such drivers are available 
  103. direct from your video board's manufacturer. Drivers for many 
  104. brands are also included in Aris's "MPC Wizard."  You must have 
  105. at least 512K of video RAM. Use Windows Setup to change your 
  106. driver.
  107.  
  108. 4. Movie playback requires installation of the Video for Windows
  109. runtime, which can be found in the VFW directory.  Just go to the
  110. File Manager of Windows, then launch the SETUP.EXE program in the
  111. VFW directory.  
  112.  
  113. 5.  If the sound breaks up, try to increase the buffering done by Windows.
  114. To do this, go to the Main Window, select Control Panel, then select 
  115. Drivers.  Double click on the MCI Sound selection and move the slider to
  116. 9 seconds of buffering.  If this doesn't entirely solve the problem,
  117. you may need to increase the memory buffering in the MSCDEX statement in
  118. your AUTOEXEC.BAT using the /m: switch.  Try increasing it to 16 or 20. See
  119. also the Windows help file RAINFOR.HLP for more troubleshooting tips. You
  120. can launch the file from the ? icon in the Tropical Rainforest Program
  121. Group in Program Manager or from the ? button in the program itself.

  123. 6.  Movie performance varies, based on the caliber of your installed 
  124. hardware.  Best performance is obtained from MPC-compatible CD-ROM drives,
  125. which are capable of transfering data at 150KB per second or greater.  
  126. You can test the performance of your drive with the MPC Wizard(tm).

  129. DOS (NON-WINDOWS) USERS
  130. -----------------------
  131.  
  132. If you have Windows 3.1, we strongly recommend use of our Windows
  133. navigation program. See above for details.
  134.  
  135. A DOS application called "RAINFOR" has been included to help find your
  136. way through the files.  To start the DOS version, type "RAINFOR" at the
  137. CD-ROM drive's DOS prompt.  Unfortunately, low-resolution versions of each
  138. picture are not available on this disc.  You will need a Sound Blaster card
  139. or 100% compatible to hear the music. 
  140.  
  141. The TAB key moves through the fields, and the ENTER key
  142. selects.  A mouse is also supported.  Best display quality is obtained
  143. with Super VGA video boards having 512K of video memory.  Most mainstream
  144. video boards are supported, but there are new ones every day.  The best
  145. solution to this problem is to use our Windows version.  Sound may be
  146. played if you have a Sound Blaster or compatible card--just select the
  147. Sound button in the application.  Remember, the PC was not designed as a
  148. multimedia machine, so this interface is not as robust as we would prefer.

  163. You may use the IMAGE ALCHEMY shareware program for two weeks
  164. without registering the software and paying the fee.  Please
  165. note, this program works well on all 640 x 480 or smaller
  166. images.  It offers many fine capabilities, such as
  167. conversion between many different formats, including Mac and PC,
  168. and it should find a home in your imaging utilities directories.
  169. The registered version will handle images larger than 640 x 480.

  172. DOS (Non-Windows) Version Tech Tips:
  173.  
  174. 1.  Try installing a VESA driver if you have a 512K VGA card and Image
  175. Alchemy doesn't recognize your video board. Such drivers usually come on
  176. a floppy diskette supplied by the manufacturer.
  177.  
  178. 2.  Use the LOWRES program if you don't have 512K of video memory.
  179.  
  180. 3.  Use our Windows interface.  It's really much nicer!

  186. There are 100 high-quality still images, 100 sound tracks, and 25 movies
  187. stored on this disc.  Images are stored in several formats for your
  188. convenience:

  190. 1.  24-bit TIF, in 640 x 480 format, for high resolution paint 
  191. programs and desktop publishing, in the TIFF directory. Users with 
  192. Hi-Color or True-Color cards may view these images with programs 
  193. capable of 24-bit image display.

  195. 2.  8-bit PCX, 640 x 480 format, for most DOS paint programs, in the
  196. PCX directory.

  198. 3.  8-bit BMP, 640 x 480 format, for compatibility with Windows, in
  199. the BMPLARGE directory.
